DARK CIRCLES Reduction

Book an appointment

Dark circles are a very common issue for our patients. You need to understand that dark circles can stem from different issues. We often need to work on several elements in order to improve the appearance of your face and to give you a more radiant look. Everything begins with an analysis of the periorbital areas.

Here are the most common factors found in assessments of dark circles:

Hyperpigmentation due to exposure to the sun

Excessive exposure to the sun without protection can cause two major problems to the skin, i.e. brown spots and the thinning of the skin. By attacking the skin, the sun causes brown spots to be produced. These sun marks are often to be found around the dark circles and can make them even appear even more obvious. Marks can easily be removed with pulsed light. Usually a single treatment is sufficient.

Loss of skin density in the dark circle area

Loss of collagen density in the dermis causes winkles to appear, but it also causes hollow areas, especially in the concave areas of the face. Even a very slight loss of collagen will make dark circles appear more sunken.

1st tool : Ultrasounds (Ulthera, Impact, Accent)

The Ulthera easily stimulates the regeneration of the dermis. Ultrasounds from the Ulthera cause micro-burns deep down in the skin. These miniscule damage points stimulate the skin to produce collage, without anything being visible on the surface. Over the next few days, the dark circle will be less deep and this potential will increase over the following year. This treatment does not require a recovery period and only causes very slight pain.

Dermaskin also offers you the possibility of working on your dark circles with other ultrasound technology. We can use the Accent and/or the Impact in order to heat the skin with ultrasounds. The Meso Plus technique, which is unique to Dermaskin combines pro-fractured energy, PRP, filler agents and the Impact ultrasound.

2nd tool : fractionated energies

(Laser Sciton Erbium Yag, Laser CO2, Venus Viva, RF Pixel)

Different factors will allow us to choose which of these energies is preferable. Essentially, we can separate fractionated energies into two groups. There are fractionated lasers and fractionated radiofrequencies. Patients with a higher phototype will only be offered fractionated radiofrequencies, in order to reduce the risks of hyperpigmentation after the treatment. You should really know that the number of days of redness post-treatment can be modulated by adjusting the settings of our treatments. Not everyone can afford to have redness and swelling for 3-5 days. So, we have to work around that.

Loss of volume where the dark circles and the cheeks meet

Filler agents are tools which can often allow us to work on dark circles and the area where they meet the cheeks with minimal intervention. Some patients will be suitable candidates for the use of fillers in this area.

What you need to bear in mind about circles under the eyes is that they should always be less prominent than the cheeks below them. Therefore, it is sometimes necessary to re-densify the cheek to fill the hollow. Moreover, filler agents injected into circles under the eyes can sometimes congest this area.

Here is an example which really illustrates a non-optimal treatment, with excessive use of fillers.

Here is another example where filling agents alone were insufficient, as the skin in this area did not have the required tonus to hold the filler agents correctly.

So, patients need to undergo a full assessment in order to choose the best plan of action. At Dermaskin, Dr. Laflamme always takes the time to come up with a treatment plan which will meet your needs.

Blue color in the undereye area (vascular)

Blueish circles under the eyes are caused by underlying vascularization which can be seen through the skin. When we work on the thickness of the skin with different technologies, the underlying vascularization is less visible. So, the circles under the eyes are less blue in appearance. Some creams may also be used in order to improve the color of circles under the eyes.

Sub-cutaneous fat pockets

The use of technology on the under-eye area can improve the density of the skin. Therefore, the skin can better support the fat pocket. Moreover, when it is filled, the skin will better ‘level’ the edges of the fatty pockets, if they are not too large.

For large bags under the eyes, a surgical option can be envisaged, often in combination with non-surgical treatments.

Cutaneous Xanthomae (lipid depositis)

Small deposits of fatty cells on the skin are called cutaneous xanthomae. These deposits are very easy to remove using our lasers. Xanthomas may reappear in time, but as it is easy to remove them, the condition can be kept under control.
