Most patients don’t know the difference between botulinum toxin and filler agents. As opposed to filling agents, botulinum toxin does not give the injected area any volume. In fact, it is the muscles which are injected in order to relax them. This allows your face to look more rested and more youthful in appearance it also avoids wrinkles becoming permanent.

What are the clinical indications for BOTOX?

The use of this medication not only promotes a youthful appearance, but it is also an excellent PREVENTATIVE tool. In fact, prolonged use of Botox allows the skin in the areas above the muscles which are injected not to be repeatedly contracted and so it will not be marked by expression lines.

Botulinus toxin is mainly used to treat :

  • wrinkles on the glabella (between the eyebrows)
  • horizontal lines on the forehead
  • crows’ feet (eye area)
  • orange peel skin in the chin area
  • wrinkles in the nose area (‘bunny lines’)
  • vertical lines around the mouth (‘smoker’s lines)
  • aging necks
  • bruxism (teeth grinding)
  • hyperhidrosis (excessive perspiration) on the forehead, hands, feet and underarms

What happens during a BOTOX treatment session?

For patients who have already had Botox, the treatment lasts around 10 to 15 minutes. Pictures of every patient are taken beforehand in order to keep a record of the patients skin evolution. Then the botulinum toxin is injected by Dre Laflamme with the use of fine needles, in order to minimize discomfort. As the injection is done in a matter of minutes, even patients who are not comfortable with injections usually tolerate the treatment very well. Then you can go about your business and use make-up, if you wish.

Which brand of botulinus toxin does Dermaskin offer?

Dermaskin offers you the choice between Botox (by Allergan Pharma) and Xeomin (by Merz Pharma).

How many treatment sessions are necessary?

The effects of botulinum toxin can be seen between 3 and 7 days after treatment and it is at its peak between 10 and 14 days after treatment. The effect is not permanent and it will fade after 3 to 4 months. However, patient satisfaction can last up to 6 to 8 months. In fact, the more you use this medication, the longer the effect tends to last. Moreover, the quantity required may diminish with time as the muscles get atrophied. If you decide to stop the treatment, the expression lines on your face will take on the appearance they had before you started. In fact, your wrinkles will have stopped progressing during the period you used the product and that is why this medication is deemed to have preventative benefits.

What are the possible risks and side effects, and what recovery time is required?

Botulinum toxin is harmless when it is administered by a well-trained doctor. You should be aware that at Dermaskin, Dr. Laflamme herself administers all the injections to her patients.

The innocuousness of this medication has been widely proven, as it has been in use for many years, in particular to treat medical conditions such as headaches, bruxism, dystonia, cerebral palsy, and more.
Side effects from botulinum toxin are rare, temporary and completely reversible. Some people may complain of a headache after the injection; this is due to the fact that a liquid had been inserted into the muscles. If a headache occurs, it will normally only last for a few hours. Paradoxically, the opposite is also possible, and some people will have a feeling of relaxed muscles and a reduction in pressure on their forehead; this is due to the injected muscles resting.

Incidentally, there may be redness and a small lump which looks like a mosquito bite at the site of the injection, which will fade within a few hours. More rarely, some bruising may also form.

After the treatment, patients can return to their day-to-day activities immediately. The sites of the injections, if they are slightly visible, can be covered with make-up. We recommend that you avoid rubbing or pressing the treated areas for 4 hours. Also, you should avoid being in a bent-over position for the first 4 hours, in order to avoid the injected medication moving to other muscle groups.
